Mandrake linux 8.2. Installation of OpenOffice.Org 1.1 Need help.

Greeting.

I am currently attempting to install OpenOfice.Org 1.1 from a PC World CD
(sept 2003) onto my Mandrake Linux 8.2 setup. So far, I have installed 20
files on root/mnt/cdrom/featured/. ( I think, because when I remove the CD
and try to find the files I get an error message that file:/cdrom/featured/
does not exist)
These include: three .exe files: aaw6181.exe, frui.exe, and multires.exe.
three OpenOffice files: openofficeboxbmp, openofficeboxjpg and
openofficeorghtm. Two other files also seem important:
OOo_1.1rc2_Linuxintel_install.tar.gz and OOo_1.1_rc2_Wintel32install.zip

I would like to get OpenOffice.org on my K index so I can use it for work
processing and to open email attachments. The Readme File requires a kernel
version 2.2.13 or higher glibc2 version 2.2.0 or higher (?) and Gnome 2.0 or
higher.
What should I do now?

Thanks
Ian Levingston.

Hi people,

still marching on with Linux, things are going well, although I have the
following issues if anyone can help:

Deskpro onboard sound: utterly not found
Brother MFC3100c printer: found but no driver, wont print at all
(Mandrake 9.2)

Sound card is not so much of a bother as I have a spare pci card here that
Linux finds easy as. But printing is about the last step I need to never have
to use Windows at home again.

(BTW Ian, 9.2 comes with OO.org 1.1, so to get this great office system
running, you could just re-install Linux! :-) )

Regards,
Tony

Sorry to be the kiss of death on this one but I have not found any Linux
drivers for the Brother Multi function printers. Give me a yell if you
or anyone else finds some as my folks have one of these unsupported
printers.

What about an hp deskjet 3550 (someone gave me a new boxed unit they got free
with one of those Warehouse Stationary pcs).

(before anyone asks, I have searched for this stuff, but had no luck).

TH
HP are pretty much supported out of the box. Although if it is to brand
new, the drivers may not be written yet.

Unfortunately no exact match, but maybe one of the other models will be
close enough.

Or use the OOo 1.1 installer which works very well.

The printrer you mention in your next post is supported (here:

On further inspection it looks like the 3100 is a linux paperweight at present

OOo_1.1_rc2_Wintel32install.zip
Thats another fine pickle you've got us into Stan.
Lets start at the start.
Installing files onto /mnt/cdrom/ should be pretty much impossible as
that is a cd that is in your tray. That is why when you remove the cd
the /featured directory disappears.

The three .exe files are for windows.
aaw6181 = ad-aware
frui = fresh ui (a 3rd party tweakiu alternative)
multires = unknown to me

openofficebox.bmp and openofficebox.jpg are pictures
openofficeorg.htm is a web page

OOo_1.1_rc2_Wintel32install.zip is for windows.

OOo_1.1rc2_Linuxintel_install.tar.gz is for linux. But you won't be able
to install this onto mdk8.2. Dependency hell.

We have 2 choices
1. i donate my 8.2 boxed set to you that i no longer use. Give me your
address again if you want this.

2. You bring in the box next meeting and we load a more up to date
version on it.

Dear Michael

Thanks for your advice; I am beginning to feel that I am not the Linux Type!
I think that the best thing for me to do is to ditch my 8.2 boxed set
altogether. Many of the programmes referred to in the Manual that came with
it are not even on the CDs - GIMP, Star Office, etc. I seem to have bought
rather a pup. Hopefully the Manual will still be relevant to some of the
later stuff.

I have tried a couple of books from the Library, but they only teach me how
to use the shell to change directories, list files, etc. most of which I seem
able to do with the mouse anyway. Nothing about how to install software,
trouble-shoot etc.

The next question is what should I use instead. I assume that the old PC
rule about never using the latest version of anything holds good in Linux as
elsewhere, so 9.1 appeals. What would you advise?

I will arrange to bring the box with me to the next Meeting (assume Wednesday
4 February?) and would appreciate any assistance available.

Regards
Ian.

I have found that 9.1 carries and (installs by default) a lot more programs
than 9.2. This is one of the reasons I´m still using 9.1.
You would have OOffice and Gimp and a lot of other stuff if you used 9.1
Sure some of it doesn´t run that well but the major stuff listed above does
run well.

If you would like to try 9.1 I have the CD´s and ISO´s here, just let me
know:)

Chris.

Yes, 8.2 is soo out of date in regard to the libraries (these are needed
in new programs) that is is very hard to install software onto.

But a new Linux distro will have newer software included with it.
